Each year ARC Savannah and the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary (Skidaway Island in Savannah, GA) hold a competition to choose the image for the Gray's Reef Film Festival poster. In Nov 2016 I created two paintings for this competition.Though neither of them were chosen by ARC Savannah, Chris Hines--Superintendent for State Programs at Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary--and the staff who work there, chose my paintings as their favorites, assigning them the special title of "Honor of Gray's Reef". They praised the beauty, detail and meaningful message of my paintings and so gave them a special place in the art show which accompanies the yearly film festival.
This beautiful, natural coral reef, which stretches along the coastline of Georgia from around Savannah to Brunswick, is a true gift of Nature, and there are many who volunteer their time, money and skills to assist in the monitoring and protection of the reef. In many of the short films online, the divers who give their time and effort to this work, without pay, just for love of the reef, are praised and noted. My theme brings this together: the divers joined in a circle of love, the boat from which they launch is above them, and the beautiful flora and fauna of the reef swim below. PLEASE NOTE: every single coral, fish, animal or plant in the painting is taken from photos of Gray's Reef.
