Mary of Magdala, beloved disciple of Christ, held a special place in His heart. It is said by some that she was his twin soul, the feminine Yin to his Yang, and even that she was his Wife. She was a pivotal figure in the early church, a female mystic who studied in Egypt and came to hear the words of the Messiah--but she has been miscast as a prostitute. At the end of the 6th century, Pope Gregory the Great gave a sermon in which he characterized Mary Magdalene as a harlot. He tells us exactly how he did it -- by aligning her with the "sinful woman" in Luke, with Mary of Bethany in John, and with the Mary from whom seven devils were ejected --perhaps to simply things for the masses and produce one colorful and distinct personality--but that entity was not the true Magdalene. She sits here in a temple in Egypt, with the columns illustrating her role and that of the Christ, and with the curtain drawn to reveal an ancient library of occult literature and the gnostic pearl. Her mysterious cat, with a sad gaze, shows the pain her mistress feels at her separation from her Beloved. She is a patron saint of many peoples including apothecaries, contemplatives, hairdressers, glovemakers, perfumers, tanners, penitents, reformed prostitutes and all women.
