Among the oldest Chinese myths is NuWa, the Great Mother, Creatress of all animals and human beings--her upper body is that of a beautiful woman, but her lower half is in the form of a great dragon or snake. She thought the newly Earth created by PanGu was beautiful, yet it lacked something special, and so she decided to create animals of all kinds: oxen, birds, dogs, cats, fish and more, and filled the new Earth with these living creatures. Again, looking over the world, she loved the animals but still felt she wanted more, a creature who could communicate with her, acknowledge her, LOVE her and be loved by her in return. She took the rich mud from the banks of the Yellow River and formed human beings: females first, then males, and created in them a desire for each other--she is also said to have created Marriage as a bond between them. After all her work, a band of savage demons and wild dragons fought in heaven and torn a great hole in the sky--the rains of heaven poured out and nearly drowned all creatures on Earth and so NuWa melded 5 huge, colored stones together and mended the Sky, thus saving all life from perishing.
