Puno, Peru is located in southeastern Peru, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, at nearly 13,000 feet above sea level. Inca tradition has it that Manco Capac, the first Inca, rose from the waters of Lake Titicaca, under the orders of the Sun God, to start the Inca Empire. The church pictured is called Puno Chapel--it is painted in the beautiful blues of lake and sky, a much-loved palette of the area. A large condor, the national bird of Peru, soars above and the flag of Peru appears on the upper right. The colorful costumes of the dancers are traditional Peruvian dress for the area--the smiling gentleman in front wears a Peruvian 'chullo', made of alpaca wool. The market ladies in the background sell two prominent products of Peru--alpaca wool blanket and potatoes (of which Peru has MANY varieties!).
