When most people think of ancient Peru they think of the Inca--but the Moche culture was rich, powerful and influential in Peru nearly 1000 before the Inca. Sipán is a Moche archaeological site in northern Peru, in Lambayeque, that is famous for the tomb of El Señor de Sipán (Lord of Sipán), excavated by Walter Alva. It is considered to be one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the last thirty years, because the main tomb was found intact and undisturbed by thieves. Tombs were found full of Moche jewelry, masks, and art, intricately hand-crafted, and much of it in solid gold. I was struck by the fierce mask of the Lord of Sipan, as well as the earrings and pectoral piece--it was very different from later Inca art, a little alien, and very compelling.
